Groundworks are the part of a build nobody sees once the job is finished, yet they determine whether everything above stays stable for decades. The material choices made at sub-base and capping stage matter just as much as the finishes that go on top. What Are Recycled Aggregates?
Recycled aggregates are produced by processing construction, demolition and excavation waste, most commonly crushed concrete, brick and asphalt, into graded materials suitable for reuse. Once collected, the material is crushed, screened and sorted to remove contaminants such as timber, plastic and metal, leaving a clean, graded product that meets recognised specifications.
The whole process in the UK is governed by the WRAP Quality Protocol, developed by the Environment Agency and the Waste and Resources Action Programme, which sets clear rules for turning waste into a usable product rather than leaving it classified as waste. Once material meets this protocol, it can be bought, sold and used with the same confidence as newly quarried stone.

For applications where a specific mineral composition or particle characteristic is required, such as certain concrete mixes, primary aggregates remain the right choice. For sub-bases, capping, fill and drainage, recycled material is very often the more practical and cost-effective option.

Why Are Recycled Aggregates Better for the Environment?
The construction and operation of the built environment accounts for around 60% of all materials used, 33% of all waste produced and 45% of CO2 equivalent emissions in the UK. Given the scale of that impact, every tonne of recycled material used in place of virgin stone makes a genuine difference.
Using recycled aggregates reduces the need for quarrying, which in turn reduces blasting, land disturbance and the long-term loss of natural landscape. It also cuts down on haulage. Recycled material is frequently processed close to where it will be used, whereas primary aggregates often travel much further from quarry to site, adding to both cost and emissions.
Recycled aggregates already make up just over 30% of all aggregates used in UK construction, and that proportion continues to grow as more developers and contractors build sustainability commitments into their procurement decisions. Where Are Recycled Aggregates Used in Groundworks?
Recycled aggregates aren't a niche product reserved for small jobs. They're specified on major infrastructure schemes as well as domestic extensions, and their uses span several stages of a build.
Sub-bases and capping layers
Graded recycled products such as 6F5 crushed concrete are widely used to cap off soft or weak subgrade, providing a stable base for roads, hardstanding and building foundations to be constructed on top of. This 80mm-down material compacts well and is equally suited to permanent sub-bases and temporary site access roads.
Drainage and soakaways
Certain gradings of recycled aggregate offer excellent permeability, making them well suited to land drainage, French drains and soakaway construction. Their open structure allows water to move through freely, which is increasingly important as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) become a standard requirement on new developments.
Large-scale groundworks and piling mats
On bigger sites, recycled aggregates are used as bulk fill, for building up levels, and as piling mats capable of supporting heavy plant. Their consistent grading and strong compaction characteristics make them a dependable choice where large volumes are needed quickly.

This is a fair question, and one that's answered by the standards recycled aggregates have to meet before they can be sold. Recycled aggregates must pass rigorous testing before they can be certified under frameworks like the WRAP Quality Protocol, confirming they're a high-quality product rather than waste. Beyond WRAP certification, recycled aggregates also need to meet the technical requirements set out in British Standards and their European equivalents.
Products such as 6F5 crushed concrete are produced to Highways specification, meaning they're held to the same standard expected of materials used on major road and infrastructure projects. In practice, this means a well-graded recycled aggregate delivers the compaction, load-bearing and drainage performance a groundworks engineer is designing for, without the assumption that recycled automatically means lower grade.
